Skim Rukun Tetangga telah diperkenalkan pada tahun 1975 berikutan dengan berkuat kuasanya Peraturan-Peraturan Perlu (Rukun Tetangga) 1975 di bawah Ordinan Darurat 1969.

Pada peringkat awalnya, Skim Rukun Tetangga ini berfungsi bagi mengawal keselamatan kawasan kediaman.

Mulai 1 Januari 1983, kerajaan telah menyusun semula Skim Rukun Tetangga berkonsepkan semangat kejiranan untuk memperkukuhkan perpaduan di kalangan komuniti setempat.

Kawasan Rukun Tetangga mula ditubuhkan di Sarawak pada 12 Jun 1985 di Sibu iaitu KRT yang pertama adalah KRT Perumahan SEDC Sukun, Sibu.

Perluasan penubuhan KRT ini meningkat dari tahun ke tahun dan tersebar luas ke seluruh pelosok negeri Sarawak. Jumlah KRT terkini negeri Sarawak 1,062 unit.

Aktiviti seperti gotong-royong membersihkan kawasan sekitar dapat membantu dalam menangani permasalahan yang berlaku misalnya peningkatan kes demam denggi (foto : Kejiranan Mesra Pintar Kampung Bintangor)
